Blizzard Prep, Knitter-Style

Here’s the thing, in New England when they are predicting a storm you can tell a lot about a person. Some go to the store and get water and dry goods in case they lose power. Some go to the store and get ice melt, shovels, beer, and a roast for the crockpot. Some do nothing.

Me? I make my kids bring in enough wood to heat the entire street for a week. Then I shop for some good food and munchies for the kids. Then, I make sure I have enough projects on hand to knit.

And then as if knitting weren’t enough, I have FINALLY learned to crochet, and am working on this project basket for my knitting things. It will be made in two colors – this eggplant will be the bottom and go a short way up the side. Then I will change over to a cream to finish up the sides.

To top things off… you know… just in case we get snowed in for a month (or my ADD gets the better of me, and I just HAVE to start a new project)… I have the yarn to start this fabulous afghan which will coordinate wonderfully with the wall hanging quilt I made last year.

For those of you who have been following along with my No-Spend Challenge, do not worry! My Mama got me this yarn! It is so perfect! I am so in love with the lime green.

So, yes, you can tell a lot about a person by what they do to prepare for a storm. What is on your must-have list?

To all of those in the path of the storm, stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy your days of winter white…

New Beginnings

I started 2013 off with a BANG! I started a fabulous pair of socks on Christmas day, and finished then January 1! Please ignore my saggy kneecaps (seriously, when did THAT happen???)

Well, here we are. It’s the first week of the year… AGAIN. Funny how that just keeps happening.

Do you find yourself in the same boat as me? Every year I make these lofty resolutions, and every year I almost NEVER get started because  I never make myself a roadmap of how to achieve my resolutions.

So, here’s the thing. The reason we all love new years is the same reason we all start diets on a Monday. A fresh start. There has got to be some little mechanism in out brains that signals these types of dates as a place to put a refresh. Which, when you think about it, is pretty silly. We can start something any day of the week, any week of the year. We could even *gasp* start something new in the middle of the day. Just random!

This year I made a resolution to not make a resolution. I am going to make small goals each week in different important areas of my life. For example, every year I have resolved to get back into shape and lose weight. Whatever. What does that even mean? I mean, if I could do that so simply, I would have done it by now. So what I have finally decided is that I need to make smaller goals within my overall vision for what I want for myself in the future. Does that make sense? I also decided to make these goals weekly. That way, if I do something and it doesn’t work or doesn’t feel like it will move me in the direction I need to go to feel accomplished, I can change the goal next week. Or if I have  week (like this week) where everyone in the house has the flu (including this Mama), I can reduce the goal or just repeat it next week.

***** As a complete side note… Who the heck came up with the show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”??? Seriously! Did the producers just go out and say “Let’s pick a family that we can make fun of and then put it on tv???” OK… back to the blog******

All of this is not to say that I don’t have an overall goal for the year. I do. Well, I guess I don’t exactly have a quantifiable goal. I have a direction I want my life to be moving in. Right now, movement in the right direction is more important that a number on  scale or in the bank account.

OK, now that I have cleared up all that for y’all – here are my goals for this week (even though my week is almost over)

  • Gather and sort all of my knitting projects, yarn, patterns, needles nd supplies so that next week I can decide what I am truly going to make and what I can sell or give away
  • Get to my local gym 3 times (I have started working at our local gym in exchange for a membership)
  • Stop trying to figure out how to “catch up” on my blogging, and just come back and “start over”. Putting up at least 3 posts this week.
  • Make 2 healthy dinners and breakfasts this week, and try out 3 different bag lunches for the kids.

So there you have it. I am back. Did you miss me? I’ll be back tomorrow to share the other couple quick projects I have finished this week. (well, they are Christmas presents that I am only now finishing. Please tell me you do this, too!)

My baby’s back!

Well, my laptop had more things wrong with it than just not reading my memory card. We had to send her away to the HP people, who took her apart, ripped everything down and rebuilt her. Can you say “withdrawal”???? Ya. Anyways, now I have her back.

Who, aside from me, is excited for school to start? I love fall! I love making plans for all of my projects (most of which never get done, but hey… ). While finishing Maddy’s pink pom pom socks, I decided this school year would kick off the year of the sock! My goal is to knit a pair each month… that’s right… 12 pairs this year! I have picked out several patterns (FREE) on Ravelry.

Maddy’s Pink Pom Pom Peds

Am I only knitting socks this year??? Heck no! I still have 872 other knitting projects to work on, and I want to start another quilt. I have already started My September Socks in a fabulous Malibrigio Sock yarn. I am also working on a sweater for Kevin right now.

September Socks and Kev’s Sweater

Other quick updates from the Ort-stead… Aidan is running cross country, Maddy is playing Middle School Field Hockey, and Katie is on the JV Volleyball team… And you know what that means? LOTS of knitting time! lol…

We are also looking at some change in the near future – I am looking for a job… *gasp*… I know, right?

OOooooooh - and just because I love to brag on my kids…. we went to a wedding this summer, and I was able to get the BEST family photo (albeit without Katie)…

The Ort’s all Cleaned Up!

That’s all for now, but next time I will fill you in on all the fabulous sock patterns, and other Work-In-Progress I have here at the house!

Enjoy the last couple weeks of summer… I know I will – while dreaming of FALL!

Joy…

… is arriving at the airport with yarn, needles and patterns for 2 different projects. And then having 6+ hours of flying/waiting time for the weekend.

The only question now? Pink socks for Maddy? Or the blue kaftan for me?

3 Envelope Roast… or, How the crockpot saved my marriage

Well, in all seriousness, my marriage is, like, on the other side of the planet from needing saving. But… if it did, this roast could certainly do it. It takes exactly 2 minutes to start dinner, really, I timed it today.

Step 1: Get out crockpot and put in your pot roast meat.

Step 2: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of warm water with 1 envelope of dry italian dressing mix, 1 envelope of dry ranch mix and 1 envelope of au jus mix.

Step 3: Pour over top of roast, put lid on and cook on low for 6 hours.

Step 4: Enjoy.

My marriage may not need saving, but what this roast DOES do for me is make my evening far less stressful on days when I am running errands and carting kids around for the good part of the day.

ANYWHOOOOO…. Now that we have that little bit of joy from my day out of the way…. What have you been working on this week? Me? Well, thanks for asking… I have been working on Kevin’s socks. They will hopefully be done by the middle of this next week.

I have also been working on my Knit-a-Long Kaftan sweater. We are setting out a pretty laid back pace, as all of us have many projects on our plates. It has taken us a few tries to get the gauge right, I looked all over the internet and found another knit a long from a while ago for the same sweater. The feedback was that the sweater runs large, and so far we have found this to be true.

If you are interested in joining us, I will be posting the specifics of the sweater tomorrow with a link to the pattern. I’ll start the online knit a long here next week…
